Panelists

Detective Matt Harmon

Detective Harmon is a detective with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office assigned to the special investigations group. They focus on narcotics, gangs, guns, and human trafficking. He has been in law enforcement since 2005 and working as a detective since 2013. He is a crisis intervention officer, juvenile officer, crash investigator, and homicide investigator. He handles a majority of the investigations regarding sex trafficking and prostitution for the agency. He is also member of the Lake County Human Trafficking Coalition.

Detective Tamara Remington, Retired

Tamara Remington has been in law enforcement for 24 years, starting at San Jose Police Department in California and recently retiring from Sheboygan Police Department in Wisconsin. She has worked in various capacities ranging from Gang Detective to School Resource Officer, most recently as Detective specializing in Human Trafficking. She joined the Federal Anti-Human Trafficking Taskforce for Eastern District of Wisconsin in 2013 and in 2016 was part of the State task force team that developed the Child Sex Trafficking Indicator and Response Guide for Wisconsin and was on the Advisory Committee for the Wisconsin State Anti-Trafficking DCF Board. She has worked many Human Trafficking cases over the years, taking cases both through state and federal courts.

Chenel Vanden Berk-RN, BS, JD,  SANE-A

Chenel Vanden Berk is a nationally certified sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). She is currently the SANE Coordinator for Advocate Aurora Condell Medical Center. Chenel is privileged to be the coordinator for a program that offers trauma informed medical treatment and evidence collection for survivors of sexual assault and sexual abuse. As the president of the IL Chapter of IAFN, she is excited to be part of a uniquely qualified statewide professional community that combines forensics, nursing and collaboration with a multitude of disciplines such as advocates, law enforcement and legal professionals dedicated to helping survivors of sexual assault. Being a SANE has been her passion for over 6 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University, DC and her Juris Doctor from Loyola University School of Law, Chicago. Prior to nursing, Chenel practiced public interest law with a focus on families and domestic violence.  Becoming a SANE has allowed her to combine her passion for helping people with a love of science and justice.  She is a member of the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Medical Subcommittee, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Human Trafficking Council and Lake County State’s Attorney Sexual Assault Law Enforcement Committee.  Her goal is to continue learning from others, serve as a community resource and recruit more talented nurses to become part of this amazing profession.

Sharmila (Sam) Wijeyakumar

Sam is Sri Lankan by ethnic origin, British by birth, she’s lived between North America and Europe for the last 21 years. She is a survivor of Human Trafficking, part of her journey to healing from this atrocity was acquiring faith in Jesus Christ and a passion to do something about this issue. She first fought Human Trafficking with Pro Nino where they reduced the rate of child trafficking by 49% in 13 Spanish speaking countries in the early 2000’s. This led her to founding Rahab’s Daughters a nonprofit that fights to prevent, rescue and rehabilitate survivors of trafficking. She serves alongside her husband of 21 years and daughter to prevent trafficking; as well as rescue and rehabilitation. She leads over 200 volunteers and employees across 6 states. Today, as well as leading her nonprofit, she works in the high tech world of digital transformation for Liferay, a software company. She serves enterprise organizations with the help of an amazing team. She believes she is blessed to have the support & freedom to balance her faith, family, vocation and passion.
