How to Navigate Graduation

The month of May is extremely busy as this is a season of change. Whether you're graduating or experiencing a friend/family member graduate, there is a lot to consider when taking in the new changes that come with graduation.

I recently graduated high school and it has been a mixed emotions experience. I haven't taken the time to reflect on the past four years and what it all means to me now because of the busyness. There have been other graduation celebrations in my life that have kept me busy enough to not think about the fact that I just finished high school. Now that things have slowed down ever so slightly, it is time for reflection and expression of gratitude.

Graduating high school feels surreal. Most seniors are ready to be done and leave that chapter in the past while others are sad to see it come to an end. Everyone says that after high school life gets real, which can be daunting. It's important to take it one day at a time especially after graduation because of the frequent changes. You don't have to know exactly what you're doing, take your time. It's also important to celebrate yourself and your accomplishments; don't downplay any of your achievements that you worked hard for. You could throw yourself a graduation party, a trunk party, have a casual get together, or even go out to eat with loved ones to celebrate. You deserve to be recognized, so enjoy your special time.

After your reflection and celebration time, you have to move forward. Moving on is a healthy way of processing experiences. Staying stuck in the past isn't healthy as it prohibits you from planning your future. Remember, moving on looks different for everyone. For example, one person might get a new job and another might start living on their own. My way of moving on is to prepare myself for when I go to college. Those going to college after high school should start completing their requirements for new student registration so they are prepared and on top of what is expected of them. Those who are enlisting in the military have to prepare by making sure their tests and forms are sent in before boot camp. Those who decide to work immediately have to begin their job searches if they didn't already. Regardless of which road you're going down, life goes on. You have accomplished and experienced a once in a lifetime milestone, but there will be many more to come. Keep on growing, learning and evolving.
